Description
When the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, the American colonists severed their ties with England, declaring themselves a separate and independent nation. Over the following decades, the two nations forged different courses in history, pushing and pulling against each other. The Great War brought the two nations together in a fight against Germany, and, exactly 142 years after the Declaration of Independence, the two nations symbolically joined together again on July 4, 1918, with the issuance of a Declaration of Interdependence at Central Hall, Westminster. Including speeches from British Ambassador to the U.S. Viscount Bryce, Munitions Minister Winston Churchill and Major George H. Putnam of the United States, the program celebrated the uniting of the two countries in their fight against a common foe, Germany, while also playfully acknowledging the irony of celebrating the division of the two nations at a time when solidarity was so important. The key to the bond between these two once warring nations was their common “Anglo-Saxon” heritage as two “English-Speaking nations,” which is referenced frequently by both sides.
