RLV: Intrigued by the building of homes into hillside and rock, and the culture of the people who lived so ruggedly in the mountains, the series of photos of the 'Sassi' show just how impoverished the community was in the 60s. Interestingly, the location has become in 2018 a cultural 'hot spot' for young travelers and a UNESCO protected site as well.
The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. There is evidence that people were living here as early as the year 7000 BC. --
