American isolationists' stars and stripes emblem urging American neutrality during World War II. This is the insignia of the America First Committee was a United States non-interventionist pressure group, fighting against American entry into World War Two. The committee was launched in September of 1940, and generally put out mixed messaging. Generally, it supported isolationism and supported speakers and those who were against American entry into the war, but it was also made use of by communists, anti-Semitics, and pro-fascist speakers. It peaked at a membership of 800,000 paying members in 450 chapters, most of those being around its headquarters in Chicago. Its most prominent spokesperson was aviator Charles Lindbergh, although many other politicians and celebrities are knowing for supporting or sympathizing with the committee, including future presidents John F. Kennedy and Gerald Ford. As the atrocities being committed by the Nazi forces in Germany became more apparent, the committee held its ground on American neutrality in Europe, which, much in part due to Charles Lindbergh's fiery talks that were nearing if not past anti-Semitism, saw a loss in support. The committee disbanded three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941, which to them was a critical development meaning that the United States could no longer remain neutral in regards to World War Two.
