Description
View across Kresge Auditorium on the lower level of the Visual Arts Center. On November 11, 2014 Associate Professor Bridget R. Cooks from the Program in African American Studies and the Department of Art History at the University of California, Irvine delivered a lecture in Kresge Auditorium entitled "Double Consciousness: Remembering Black Images in American Struggles for Freedom." Her book "Exhibiting Blackness: African Americans and the American Art Museum" (2011) was awarded the inaugural James A. Porter and David C. Driskell Book Award in African American Art History in 2013. Professor Cooks's lecture highlighted Bowdoin's launch on November 11, 2014 of "Fifty Years Later: The Portrayal of the Negro in American Painting - A Digital Exhibition." This website celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Bowdoin's groundbreaking 1964 exhibition "The Portrayal of the Negro in American Painting" (see hpc400_08.jp2 through hpc 402_08.jp2, and hpc6447_14.jp2). In this image Sarah Montross, the Museum's Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow and one of the major organizers of the digital exhibition, introduces Professor Cooks.
