Description
Left to right: John H. Halford, Sr. (1885 - 1968), a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 1907 and the recipient of an honorary degree in 1927; Justice Harold H. Burton, a member of the Bowdoin College Class of 1909 and the recipient of an honorary degree in 1937 and the Bowdoin Prize in 1938; and Frances Beam (1917-2013), the wife of Philip C. Beam, Henry Johnson Professor of Art and Archaeology Emeritus and Director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art from 1939 to 1964. Professor Beam died in 2005 at the age of 95. The picture appears to have been taken in either the Bowdoin or the Boyd Gallery of the Walker Art Building. John H. Halford, Sr. and his wife, Hannah Kellett Halford, made significant contributions to the Museum during their lifetimes. He had served as Chairman of the Committee on Art Interests and made a crucial contribution of several hundred thousand dollars toward the building of the Visual Arts Center and the renovation of the Museum in the mid-1970s. A new gallery in the lower level of the renovated Walker Art Building was then named in his honor and has remained as a key exhibition space after the 2005 - 2007 renovation. His son, John H. Halford, Jr. (1916 - 1994), Bowdoin College Class of 1938, continued this generous relationship with the Museum (see hpc405_08.jp2).
