Description
View toward the south wall of the Shaw Ruddock Gallery on the upper level of the Walker Art Building. The exhibition is "Kate Furbish and Edward Hale Lincoln: New England Botanical Studies" and was shown in the Shaw Ruddock Gallery from October 04, 2018 through February 10, 2019. Catherine "Kate" Furbish (1834-1931) was born in New Hampshire, but her family moved to Brunswick, Maine shortly thereafter. She studied painting in Portland and Boston and then spent a year in Paris. Between 1870 and 1908 she painted, collected, and classified many of the native plants of Maine, resulting in a fourteen-volume work "Flora of Maine." Edward Hale Lincoln (1848-1938) was born in Massachusetts and served as a drummer in the Civil War. While a partner in a photography business he began a twenty-year project which led to the publication in 1914 of a 400-picture catalog entitled "Wild Flowers of New England." The work of both of these artists-botanists addresses the relationship between the arts and sciences and the interest in botany at the dawn of the twentieth century.
