View along the east wall (right) toward the northeast corner of the Center Gallery on the lower level of the Walker Art Building. The doorway through the east wall leads to the Halford Gallery. The exhibition is "Why Draw? 500 Years of Drawings and Watercolors at Bowdoin College," which was shown in the Osher, Halford, Center, Focus, and Becker Galleries from May 03, 2017 through September 03, 2017. Bowdoin College's distinguished collection of drawings, established in 1811 by a bequest from James Bowdoin, has grown to include a wide selection of works. This exhibition featured rarely seen works by artists from Carlo Maratti and Peter Paul Rubens to Winslow Homer, Ed Ruscha, Eva Hesse, and Natalie Frank. An exhibition catalog of the same name edited by Joachim Homann was published on May 31, 2017 by Delmonico Books-Prestel and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. A keynote lecture was presented by artist Natalie Frank on May 02, 2017 and was followed by an opening reception in the Walker Art Building.
