Description
View along the east wall (left) toward the southeast corner of the Becker Gallery on the lower level of the Walker Art Building. The exhibition is "Dissent in 1960s America: The Photography of Ken Thompson," which was shown in the Becker Gallery from January 26, 2016 through April 03, 2016. During the 1960s Ken Thompson worked for the General Board of Global Ministries, an organization connected with The United Methodist Church. He traveled throughout the United States covering many of the leading social and political issues of the time. Rarely exhibited or published, his photographs provide an eyewitness account of the U. S. Civil Rights Movement, voter registration efforts in the South, the work of the United Farm Workers in California, the aftermath of the Watts riots, conditions on Cheyenne Indian reservations, and anti-war and anti-poverty demonstrations in Washington, D. C. Jennifer R. Scanlon, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Humanities in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies and Interim Dean for Academic Affairs at Bowdoin, worked with the Thompson Archive while researching a book to be published in February 2016. She alerted the Museum about the Archive's photographic collection, which led to the loan for this exhibition of thirty vintage prints from the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. Museum intern Frances E. Gurzenda '16 researched the selection of images and curated the exhibition with support from co-director Frank H. Goodyear.
