Description
View across Kresge Auditorium in the Visual Arts Center on October 07, 2015 during a panel discussion entitled "James Bowdoin III and the Pioneering of Art Collecting in the Early American Republic." One of the first collectors of fine art in the United States, James Bowdoin III believed strongly in the value of art as a tool in educating the members of the early American Republic. His paintings and drawings became the basis for Bowdoin College's collection and remain today a vital part of the Museum of Art's activities. Participating in the panel were: Ellen Miles, curator emerita of painting and sculpture, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery; Richard Saunders '70 (shown here), director of the Middlebury College Museum of Art and Walter Cerf Distinguished College Professor of the History of Art and Architecture; and Sarah Cantor, the Kress Research Fellow at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
