Description
[BMC 15703] British Museum online: No. 6. Lord Winchilsea, pen in hand, seated in the mouth of a small cave or rocky recess, leans back in his chair to gaze reflectively at words on the rock: 'Get out of the House'; figures are indicated below. Beside him is a table (left); on this, between two pistols and beside an hour-glass, is a skull-like mask, with contours suggesting Wellington's head; it turns up its eyes towards the hermit. Papers on Winchilsea's right hand are 'Plans of Reform in Church and State'; 'Essay on Politics' & 'Gymnastics Fanatics & Fiddlesticks.' Under the table lie boxing-gloves and single-stick. On the ground (right) are books, one open: 'The Battle of Battersea A Religious Tale'. Winchilsea wears a dressing-gown with fashionable strapped trousers and spurred boots.....A satire on the duel and on Winchilsea's announcing his intention to retire from the Lords on account of the Catholic Relief Bill.; BMC 15703 [British Museum Dept. of Prints and Drawings.
