Description
[BMC 14198] British Museum online: John Bull bows to the Archbishop of Canterbury, offering him a crown, smaller than the one which the latter holds. J. B., a stout good-natured-looking 'cit', says: Your sarvant Master Bishop preparing for the Shew I see! so am I and I have just brought you the article for our Caroline, which you can clap on her head at the same time, or depend upon it there will be a D ... .d Row! The Archbishop, in surplice and mitre, is tall and aquiline, like Manners-Sutton, and unlike the usual grotesque of these caricatures. He turns his head in profile to the left: Why Johnny at present I am only going with the old Crown to see if the [sic] cannot be used again, you see we have an eye to Economy Johnny! we don't wish to exceed a £100,000, a trifle for a sight thats [sic] happens so seldom, I don't think we shall wan't your crown, so I may as well take the jewels and add them to ours by way of Economy! They stand on a pavement with the west front of Westminster Abbey in the background. Below the title: 'This World is a Fair where the crowd is bent wholly On Gew Gaw and Rattles, noise, nonsense and Folly. Holcroft.'; BMC 14198 [British Museum Dept. of Prints and Drawings.
