Work Type
Kashmiri turnover shawl
19th century
Wool, woven, embroidery
Square shawl. Center piece is solid teal with embroidered flowers around its edge and a hand-embroidered "signature" on one corner. 2 adjacent sides have a 13" border of woven stripes with foliate arabesque designs; the other 2 adjacent sides have an 8" border of woven strips of foliate arabesque designs. Outermost border of entire shawl is made of small multicolor tabs that have been sewn together; each tab contains a detailed embroidered arabesque design. Border colors include green, fuchsia, black, teal, ivory, orange, red. 2 adjacent borders were sewn onto the right side and two on the reverse so that when the shawl was folded into a triangle for wearing, only the right side of the borders would show (thus the term "turnover shawl").
