Lawerence M. Mead speaks in a class of Roanoke College students.Lawrence M. Mead is a lively and authoritative contributor to the discussion concerning obligations of citizenship in our country. His book, Beyond Entitlement The Social Obligations of Citizenship, is a widely reviewed and discussed study of the work test and other obligations in federal social policy. He has published a number of other studies on welfare and employment policy, federal programs, policy analysis and public policy studies. Recently he has been involved in deliberations in our nation's capital on workfare and welfare reform and has often testified in Congress. He has also served as a policy analyst at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as well as being a speech writer for Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Dr. Mead is currently Associate Professor of Politics at New York University. Last spring he was Visiting Distinguished Professor of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin. A native of Huntington, New York, and a graduate of Amherst College, he received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. This event took place April 8-9 1988 at Roanoke College in Salem Virginia.
