The Cross, erected in 1922 as a memorial to Sewanee men who served in World War I, stands on the borow of the 10,000 (now 13,000) acre mountaintop domain of the University of the South, the educational center of the Episcopal Church in the South. Lighted at night, it is a familiar beacon to travelers on highways 41-A and 64 and to airline pilots.
