[Portrait of an unidentified woman]
Photograph, Cabinet Card
Image 14 x 10.5 centimeters (5.5 x 4.12 inches)
Mount 16.5 x 11 centimeters (6.5 x 4.25 inches)
Three-quarter length cabinet card portrait of a standing woman. She is dressed in a high neck bodice worn tightly over skirt to the hips with fitted sleeves and a short waist. The bodice is buttoned up the front with three rows of pin tuck pleats on either side. Around her neck is a thin gathered scarf held in the front by a thin rectangular brooch. Her skirt is a narrow skirt with folds and draping in a heavy dark material. The back appears to be bustled. The skirt also displays three rows of pin tuck pleats around the bottom hem as seen in the folded piece in the photograph. Her hair is parted in the middle and pulled back into a bun in the back. A few short curly strands of hair are out in the front, possibly bangs, which were also popular to part in the middle in the late 1880s. She is wearing small drop ball earrings, long strand of beads hanging down to her waist, and bead bracelet(s) on her left arm. Her right arm is folded behind her back across her waist. She is resting her left arm on a hip-high pillar wrapped in ivy vines and to her right is a rustic, wooden fence.
The paper photograph is adhered to cardstock. At the bottom of the cardstock, recto, is inscribed the name and address of the portraiture studio: Parlor Gallery/525 S. Ninth Street/Philadelphia. The Parlor Gallery operated for approximately thirty years, from the 1880s until the early 1900s.
The object is in good condition with light mold damage.
