Work Type
Silver gelatin print
Image 12.7 x 7.6 centimeters (5 x 3 inches)
Mount 20.3 x 25.9 centimeters (8 x 10 inches)
The image features a black child wearing a close-fitting bonnet and long dress seated in an outdoors setting. The infant holds a pacifier-like object and sits on a wooden chair. The chair has carved designs on its railings and legs and rests on a wood-slatted platform. There is brush and foliage behind the child. On the right-hand side of the image the arm and torso of another person wearing a blazer are visible. The arm of this person supports the infant from behind the chair. The matting is formed as a triptych with two flaps that open and close over the photographic object. The mount is broken along the fold lines. There is a floral decorative border printed on the mat around the space for the photograph. Beneath the photograph, a handwritten inscription reads: “Gladis May Kell(e?)y/ Born Jan. 7th 192(2?)/ aged ten months/ when picture taken,” presumably indicating the identity of the child.
Sitter may be included in the 1920 census in Pennsylvania. A Gladis Kelley is listed as residing in North Fayette, Allegheny, Pennsylvania with parents Charles D. Kelley and Norene Kelley and sister Georgetta Kelley. Gladis is identified in the census as being 1-month-old and as being black.
