Description
Sculpture now has the reputation of being the most kissed statue in Italy due to a rumor that circulated in the 1800s that any woman who kissed the statue of the dead knight would be married within the year. Born in Ravenna between 1450 and 1460, Giudarelli belonged to a family from Florence that transferred to the Romagna city at the start of the 15th century. A man of arms, knighted in 1468 by Frederick III and captain of Cesare Borgia in 1500, the following year he was killed at Imola following a banal argument caused by the non-return of a richly ornate shirt that he had loaned to a certain Virgilio Romano, his killer. This statue, today restored and no longer “kissable” [it is now housed in a protective glass case], was the symbol of the Municipal Art Gallery for a long time: according to statistics, more than five million women over a couple of centuries were unable to resist his fascination (Ravenna Tourismo e Cultura).
