George Papanicolaou came to CUMC in 1914 as a research biologist in Department of Anatomy shortly after arriving in this country from his native Greece. In 1916, he became an instructor in the Department and rose to professor of anatomy in 1947. Beginning in the 1920s, he conducted research which led to the development of the Pap Smear. In 1951, he retired from CUMC but continued to teach a course on Exfoliative Cytology. In 1961, he moved to Miami and became the director of the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Center. He died on 02/18/1962.
