Hugh DeHaven received a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University in 1915. He also attended Columbia University. In 1917, he was the sole survivor of a mid-air collision while training for the Royal Flying Corps in Toronto, Canada. This created a life long interest in crash injury research. In 1942, he organized and directed the Crash Injury Research Project (CIR) at the medical college. He was also a research associate professor in the Department of Physiology. He organized Cornell University Committee on Aviation Satiety Research in 1947. In 1950, the Crash Injury Research Project was transferred to the Department of Public Health. His pioneer research was important in the study of crash safety in airplanes and automobiles leading to the redesign of cockpits and seats on airplanes and safety features for automobiles including the seat belt and the car bag. He retired in 1954. He died in 1980.
