The American Red Cross invited New York Hospital to establish Base Hospital No 9. On July 16, 1917, doctors and nurses from New York Hospital and civilian employees were enlisted. The staff of Base Hospital No 9 was mobilized on July 21, 1917. On August 7, 1917, the organization boarded the U.S.C.T Finland for France. They arrived at St. Nazaire, France on August 20, 1917. The hospital was located in Chateauroux. On September 15, 1917 the first patient was admitted and on January 14, 1918, the first hospital train arrived. Originally a general hospital, the staff treated infectious diseases, such as mumps, measles, German measles, scarlet fever and diphtheria. In the spring of 1918, the hospital was selected as an Orthopedic Centre of the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.). A staff of orthopedic surgeons were selected and a school was started to train orthopedic surgeons. On January 14, 1919 the hospital was turned over to Base Hospital No 63. The staff left France in April 1919 and were dismissed from service on May 5, 1919.
