Description
The complex built by the Mamluk sultan Qa'itbay (reg 1468–96) between 1472 and 1474 in the northern cemetery comprised his mausoleum, a madrasa, fountain and elementary school (Arab. sabīl-kuttāb), an apartment complex (rab‛) and a water trough within an enclosure wall with two portals. The complex is notable for its wealth of detail and the delicate balance between the parts, rather than for its size. The view from the north-east, most frequently drawn and photographed, is most successful, for the elaborate decoration of the minaret beside the portal balances the mausoleum's dome. The dome is the cynosure of carved stone domes in Cairo: its decoration interweaves foliate arabesques with eight-pointed stars on an ever-decreasing surface. The way in which the eave of the sabīl-kuttāb is extended to shade the entrance portal is an effective and innovative feature, and the carving of the brackets supporting the sills of the fountain and the bulbous fleuron at the base of the dome shows equal attention to detail. The lantern-covered courtyard of the madrasa, the vestigial side iwans and the lateral extension of the qibla iwan show that later Cairene religious architecture borrowed many features from domestic architecture, such as the reception room (qā‛a) of the palace of Beshtak (1334–9). The interior decoration of the complex is even more elaborate—or, arguably, excessive. Coffered ceilings are painted and gilded, windows filled with coloured glass in stucco grilles and window hoods decorated with carved stucco. Only the marble dado has not survived.Grove Dictionary of Art
