Description
This is a cast of the head from the colossal marble statue of a draped, standing male from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Halikarnassos) housed in the British Museum. The statue was identified as a representation of the Carian dynast Mausolus (Maussollos/Mausolos) at its discovery, but this identification is speculative
it may well represent one of Mausolus' Hekatomnid ancestors. The figure's face is broad, the forehead is low, fleshy, and furrowed. His eyes are almond-shaped with heavy upper lids, the nose is prominent, and the lips are full with a slightly irregularly shaped upper lip. The figure has a close-cropped, wavy beard and long hair that falls in loose, vaguely doughy waves. The head was carved separately and slotted into the body, as the roughly chiseled section below the neck demonstrates. This cast was made with restorations to the hair, head, and face (particularly the nose) that are not present on the original. Scholars continue to debate the form of the ornate building as well as the placement of much of the sculpture associated with it. British Museum 1000.
