This cabinet card depicts a toddler who appears to be about 1 year old. They are photographed sitting near the edge of a rug on the floor. The toddler is wearing only white shorts and they have a short haircut. Both of their hands are wrapped around what could be a toy held in front of their chest. Their feet are stretched out towards the camera. A woven multi-colored rug beneath the child rests on a wooden floor close to the wall with five supportive thick lath seen within the camera’s frame. The image could have been taken outdoors on a porch or inside the home. Behind the toddler there is a wooden chair and another one appears further off in the upper left corner of the photograph. There is a blurred, small light-colored object between the two chairs.
The albumen print has a thick off-white border that is torn at the upper lefthand corner and there are small stains and discolorations throughout the image. The backing card extending beyond the image is gray with two decorative bands of thin black lines framing the print. On the back of the card, someone penciled a note that has faded. They read,
“[T]o grand mama from Edie
Did you get your money
Monday that Papa sent
702 Leal St
to De[illegible] Sarah Johnson”
This photograph is part of a collection of images that includes many photographs taken in Texas. Research on Leal Street suggests that the address inscribed could be in San Antonio.
