2.35 x 1.75 inches [tintype]; 3.75 x 2.4 inches [mat]; 4.8 x 3.75 inches [unfolded mat]
Description
This tintype features a young Black man seated in an interior setting. The man is seen from the waist up, facing the camera and directly looking at it. He appears aged between 15 and 30. The sitter is wearing a felt hat whose wide brim and soft appearance recall the popular "cowboy" hats worn by men in the larger U.S. West throughout the late nineteenth century. Lightweight felt (or straw) wide-brimmed hats were designed to provide durability and protection from weather elements to individuals spending significant amounts of time outdoors. Though the hat pictured here cannot be firmly identified, its design indicates the outdoor nature of the sitter's activity, an impression reinforced by his buttoned woolen coat. The presence of Black laborers in industries of the American West is well documented in the aftermath of the Civil War. The woolen coat and plain thick sweater/shirt worn by the young sitter might indicate employment in a cold climate region.
