This tintype portrait documents a woman seated in a fringed posing chair with her left arm resting against the armrest. The unidentified Black woman sits with her body facing the camera and her head is in a three-quarter view looking to the right of the camera. Her hair is almost completely obscured by an ornate hat decorated with feathers, cascading ribbons, and fabric (similar to a Tyrolean hat of the late 1870s). She wears a slight smirk, displaying a dimple on her right cheek. Her cheeks are just barely pink from minimal hand-coloring. She wears the decorative, white collar of her blouse that lies under a large cross on an ornate chain. Her dark jacket and skirt set is decorated with ruffles and the ruffled sleeves of the white blouse extend beyond the jacket. She wears a single dark glove on her right hand, which rests in her lap. Her left hand is relaxed on the armrest. She also wears a bracelet on her left wrist. This tintype’s corners are not clipped, which is unusual for the medium but not unprecedented. The photographer’s thumbprint, a common artifact, is in the lower right corner.
