The tintype photograph depicts a three-quarter studio portrait of an unidentified Black woman seated in front of a neutral background. Her body is positioned at an angle, while her eyes gaze to her left, beyond the scope of the camera. Her arms are propped on a padded posing chair, decorated with a fringe trim. Her left forearm is hidden behind the right. She is dressed in a gown made of a dark fabric with light colored, frilly trim around the open cuffs of her three-quarter sleeves and a light colored bow at the collarbone. She wears a black bracelet around her right wrist, small white dangling earrings, a loose chain patterned necklace, and a light colored hair piece positioned on the right side in her curled hair. The metal plate is damaged with dents and creases that obscure parts of the image including the woman’s left eye. There is some rust on the black border of the plate.
