Description
As part of Jefferson's design for UVA's Academical Village, professors lived and taught in unique Pavilions, which each served as a distinct model of architectural ideals. Pavilion Five features six massive Ionic columns spanning the width of its facade. Jefferson describes the ornamentation as "Palladio's Ionic order, with modillions." An 1850 addition was connected to the Pavilion only by a narrow passage, dividing old from new and preserving Jefferson's original structure. Remaining below the existing peaked roof is the original flat "ridge and furrow" roof of Jefferson's own design. The first occupant was George Long, Professor of Ancient Languages.
