Description
Researcher's Comments:The unabbreviated obverse reads: "D(ominus) N(oster) Magnentius P(ius) F(elix) Aug(ustus) which means "Our lord, Magnentius, dutiful and wise, Augustus." Magnentius was emperor from 350-353 AD until he was defeated by Constantius II. Comparanda suggests that the full reverse legend reads SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES. The unabbreviated reverse thus reads: "Salus D(ominorum) N(ostrorum) Aug(usti) et Caes(aris) which means "Health of our lords, Augustus and Caesar" Comparanda also suggests that the mint mark under the Chi Rho reads AMB which stands for the mint at Ambianum.
