Description
Letterpress leaflet, with wood cut. Singular Phenomenon [of a bright spot on the dark portion of the moon]. Hartwell Observatory 1858. 128mm x 204mm
Letterpress leaflet with woodcut illustration, titled 'Singular Phenomenon', showing a bright spot on the dark night side of a waxing Moon (growing). The pamphlet explains that this feature was seen with the telescope at Hartwell Observatory in 1858. Located in the village of Stone near Aylesbury in England, this was the observatory of Dr John Lee, an amateur astronomer and patron of science. It is uncertain what was seen on this occasion, but speculation could range from a small rock colliding with Moon to a shooting (meteor) being viewed head-on so that it appear a bright point source of light.
