Description
Engraving of "The Grand Orrery by Rowley"
Engraved print of a Grand Orrery by Rowley, a planetaryl model of our solar system, usually operated through clockwork gearing. The London instrument maker, John Rowley completed an early example for Charles Boyle, Earl of Orrery (1676-1731) in 1715. This device became so famous that the title of orrery was used to describe all subsequent examples made in English speaking countries. Makers such Thomas Wright developed these models into a more elaborate machine called the 'Grand Orrery'. Unlike Rowley's original machine these devices demonstrated the movement of all the then known planets.
