Commentary: Sakakawea (Sakagawea) was a northern Shoshone woman raised among the Hidatsa. She was living at a Hidatsa village in what is now North Dakota when she was taken up as a guide by Lewis and Clark. The model for the statue was a descendant of Sakakawea.
