Description
View along the west wall (left) toward the north end of the Focus Gallery on the lower level of the Walker Art Building. The doorway on the right leads through the east wall to the Center Gallery. Visible in the north wall is the entrance to the building's elevator. The exhibition is "Art Purposes: Object Lessons for the Liberal Arts" and was shown in the Osher, Halford, Center, Focus, Becker, and Media Galleries from June 29, 2019 through October 27, 2019. Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Walker Art Building, the exhibition draws its inspiration and title from an inscription in the building's Rotunda dedicating the space "to be used solely for art purposes." Bringing together works that have long been part of the Museum's collection with newer and more contemporary acquisitions, the exhibition captures the great power and positive influence that a museum has upon the modern liberal arts curriculum. The exhibition is accompanied by a new Museum collections catalog featuring approximately 120 works with brief essays from more than 70 contributors. Co-published with DelMonico - Prestel and available in June of 2019, this is the first new collections catalog in forty years. This exhibition opened to the public on June 29, 2019 with a keynote program in Kresge Auditorium entitled "Expanding the Canon," which was followed by a reception at the Museum. On June 28, 2019 a private reception was held at the Museum followed by a dinner in Daggett Lounge.
