Description
Not much is known about the artist Tatebayashi Kagei. He was a retainer of the Maeda family in Kaga, following which he relocated to Edo. He painted in the Rinpa style, and used a seal very similar to that of Ogata Kōrin. In 1738, he received a copy made by Kōrin of a fan painting by Tawaraya Sōtatsu from Kōrin's brother Ogata Kenzan. It is therefore surmised that Kagei studied painting in Edo with Kenzan.
lower right, Kagei's signature in black, a round red seal and a small square one.
