Description
In the middle of winter in 1909, New York artist George Bellows went for a few weeks to Zion, New Jersey to relax at the country home of the playwright Eugene O’Neill. During his short stay there, Bellows became so entranced with the winter landscapes he saw that he felt compelled to paint the subject again and again, applying thick, juicy layers of paint directly with the palette knife and using the knife to shape and scratch back into the paint surface for textural interest. In Winter in Zion, Bellows uses a bold palette of colors, laying in the jewel-like blues of the snow next to patches of rich amber tan for maximum contrast and impact. Bellows, born in Columbus, Ohio, studied with Robert Henri in New York and was a member of the group called The Eight, also known as the New York-based Ashcan School. An American Social Realist who is perhaps best known for his viscerally gripping sporting paintings and prints of prizefighters, Bellows demonstrates this same love for movement in his urban and rural landscapes. His formal compositions, including Winter in Zion, make exciting and effective use of diagonals that cut across the picture plane to move the viewer’s eyes around the image.
